Here at Tapi, we’ve got flooring available to suit every budget and every home. However, you want to make sure that when you’re exploring new flooring options that you’re taking into account all of the possible costs that will impact your choice and there’s nothing unexpected that might give you a fright!
This guide will explain the typical costs of carpet fitting that you should keep in mind, from the average cost of fitting to the different factors that can affect the price of different types of carpet. We’ll also give you some average costs you could work from if you’re planning a big replacement job, to just one room that needs a refresh.
Carpets can come in a range of qualities and prices, and prices are typically shown per square metre.
There are a few different factors that can affect the price of a carpet:
For example, a luxurious wool carpet, made from entirely natural materials by a well-known carpet manufacturer is likely to cost more than a nylon, polyester, or polypropylene carpet from a smaller brand.
You will find the average carpet cost varies depending on where it comes on the scale from budget to luxury:
You can figure out how much it will cost you to carpet a room if you have the measurements of the room. There is a simple formula to use to help you figure out the cost, using a 4 m2 room that is square as an example:
Width of the room x length of the room = volume of carpet needed
4x4=16m2
Volume of carpet x cost per m2 = cost to carpet room
So, if you need 16m2 of a budget carpet, you can expect to pay £160 for the carpet alone:
16m2 x £10 = £160
Want some more detailed instructions on measuring? Our guide on how to measure a room for carpet has everything you need to do this perfectly.
For a 3-bedroom home, you can assume that there are two smaller bedrooms and one large room. If we use the example of a typical British house, we can also include a large living room, a dining room, and hallway and stairs. These all have different costs depending on their size, but we’ll use average values to calculate the costs:
Bedroom 1 - 4x4=16m2
Bedroom 2 - 4x4=16m2
Bedroom 3 - 5x6=30m2
Total = 62 m2
Living room - 5x6=30m2
Dining room - 5x6=30m2
Total = 60m2
Luckily, we have an entire guide on how to do the maths for this part! Our guide on how to measure your stairs and hallway for carpet has the more detailed instructions, but here are the basics.
Based on a straight set of stairs with 13 steps, you’d need approximately 6.5m x 90cm. This doesn’t account for landings or winding staircases, but you can use a larger piece of carpet for these areas.
Stairs - (0.5m wide x 0.9m long) x 13 stairs = 6.5mx0.9m = 5.85 m2
Upper hallway - 2x3=6m2
Lower hallway - 6x3=18m2
Total = 29.85m2
Add up the measurements of all your rooms: 62 m2 + 60m2 + 29.85m2 = 151.85m2
And now you can figure out how much it could cost you to re-carpet an entire 3-bedroom home with different priced carpets:
Including the extra edging material that you will need, a mid-range carpet will come to around £4200. So, remember to account for an extra few hundred pounds for that extra material.
Now that you have the carpet costs for the amount of carpet you need, you’ll also need to make sure that you’ve including carpet fitting costs in your total budget. Now, you can fit your own carpet; however, we would always recommend that you hire a professional to do the job for you – our trusted carpet fitter partners will do the job for you in half the time, and with excellent results!
Carpet fitting costs a lot less than you might think! At Tapi, the cost to have your carpet fitted is £5.50 per m2 from our fitting partners, so based on the measurements in our example, fitting a carpet for a 3-bedroom house would cost around £836. Minimum fitting costs apply which vary depending on your location and there would also be a small fee for arranging the fitting.
Fitting a carpet is more than just the carpet that you purchase to cover the floor. There are the extra details that you might want to include:
Not only this, but you should remember that your carpet will need accessories too, such as carpet grippers, underlay, trims, stair rods, and more. If we go back to our example of a 3-bedroom house (151.85m2), you could look at the following costs:
If we add up all these numbers, the average cost to carpet a 3-bedroom house in a good quality mid-range carpet would be around £7500. However, this is just a guide to help you budget for your dream carpet – at Tapi, every single carpet fitting quote is tailored to you and your needs.
