High pile carpet is carpet with longer fibres, that help to create a softer, deeper feeling underfoot. Typically any carpet with fibres longer than around 10-15mm would be classed as high pile, giving it a plush feel compared to low pile styles and making it ideal for rooms where comfort is key.
To clean thick pile carpet, you should vacuum regularly, preferably using a setting suitable for deep fibres to avoid flattening. It’s also important to clean any spills quickly, and by blotting rather than rubbing. To really maintain the appearance and freshness of a thick carpet – and preserve the pile – you could schedule occasional professional cleaning too.
The total thickness of a carpet fitted with underlay varies in line with the specific materials used, but most installations will measure somewhere between 15mm and 30mm combined. A quality carpet underlay is a worthwhile investment, adding cushioning, improving insulation, and extending the lifespan of a thick carpet to boot.
To protect shag pile carpet from furniture marks, you can use protective pads or even coasters under the legs and feet of heavy items, to help spread the weight more evenly.
