Laminate Flooring FAQs

What is laminate made of?

Laminate flooring consists of multiple layers. It features an HDF core, made by compressing wood fibres, which is attached to a backing layer that provides extra stability. These are then topped by an image design layer that replicates the look of real wooden flooring, and covered with a clear, durable wear layer to prevent damage.

How can I clean and care for my new laminate flooring?

To keep your laminate floors in ideal condition, simply sweep or vacuum every evening and wipe up any spills right away. You can also use a laminate-friendly cleaning solution and lightly dampened mop to ensure your laminate flooring is spotless. As laminate is wood-based flooring, it doesn't like water or moisture, so avoid using a wet mop or steam cleaner.

For more tips, see our laminate care guide.

Does laminate flooring need underlay?

Yes, you’ll typically need to install an underlay before laying your laminate flooring to prevent damage from your subfloor. Laminate underlay is much thinner than carpet underlay, but it can make a huge difference to how well your flooring performs. It’s made from PE foam and is designed to reduce noise, improve airflow, and prevent moisture damage. You can also buy specialised laminate underlay for underfloor heating, which improves heat circulation in your room.

How to lay laminate flooring

Laying laminate flooring is a process with multiple steps that must be executed well to achieve the best look. We take you through each step in our guide to laying laminate flooring, but if you don’t have DIY experience, we recommend contacting a professional fitter to avoid installation mistakes. When you order laminate flooring from Tapi, we can arrange for a team of independent fitters to install your new laminate for you.

I need to know the plank dimensions; can I request these?

You can find the plank dimensions on every laminate product page on our website. Once you’ve decided which laminate flooring you’re interested in (or if you’re looking for in-person inspiration), you can visit your local Tapi store where our team will be happy to talk you through the dimensions, work out how much laminate you need for your space, and answer any other questions you might have.
